Tuesday September 10th:

Relax and try and catch up on sleep, the time difference at Calgary is 8 hours behind GMT.

We will do a half days walk, a leisurely stroll in the afternoon..

Time 2 hours  Height Gain 250m

The perfect hike for jet lag! The trail winds past a waterfall where it eventually leads you to two majestic turquoise lakes. You can't miss the panoramic views of Canmore that surround you every step of the hike.

The trail has two routes. The easy route takes you up a gravel access road with a gentle rising slope to the lake. The difficult route takes you through the wooded trail out to the Grassi Lakes Waterfall, before a steep accent to the lake. Grassi Lakes is also a popular rock climbing spot.

Wednesday September 11th:

Stanley Glacier in the beautiful Kootenay National Park

This is a there-and-back walk

Distance 9k. Height Gain 370m. Time 4 hours

Crossing the Vermillion River Footbridge we start on a zig zag path through the forest. The forest thins out after about 2k and we enter a lovely alpine meadow with incredible views in all directions. Many waterfalls are on view with the Stanley Glacier on our right. We continue upwards through a rock field, the track steepens a bit here but the views make it worthwhile. We cross over the head of the valley and make a loop before joining the outward track the way we came up.

Thursday September 12th:

Wind Ridge

This is a there-and-back walk

Distance 13k Height Gain 775m. Time 5 hours

Beginning from the car park we cross  pigeon  river or creek   and follow the signs for Wind Ridge. We emerge on  a  forest  track  as it zig zags it way uphill for 1:2k. You will get occasional views through the trees but the true beauty of this walk will be revealed above the tree line. As we approach Wind Ridge the going gets a bit steeper as we pass through meadows. Finally the ridge flattens as we come to a cairn which marks the summit. We return back the way we came.

Friday September 13th:

Free day

Saturday September 14th

Lady McDonald Tea House

This is a there-and-back walk

Distance 9k. Height Gain 900m. Time 5:5 hours

Starting from the car park we walk beside cougar creek and as the creek goes right we go left and pick up a dirt track.

The walk up Mount Lady McDonald is short and steep and we will be zig-zagging quiet a bit.   After a couple of hours we arrive at the spot where the tea house once stood but it’s been abandoned since 2002. We descend the same way back to the start where the Iron Goat Pub & Grill beckons for a pint on their patio.

Sunday September 15th

Johnston Canyon & Ink Pots walk

This is a there-and-back walk

Distance 12k Height Gain 450m. Time 4 hours

This walk takes us to Banff National Park. Established in 1885 Banff is Canada’s oldest National Park. It’s area encompasses over 6000 square Kilometres and approx. 1500 km of maintained walking trails.

Johnston Canyon was named after a prospector from Silver city who frequented this are in 1882. Ink spots are glacial springs covered in fine sediment that have been disturbed by rising water …. Hence the name Ink Spots.

We begin by heading upwards on a broad track through the canyon. We will after a while start to use catwalks that are fixed to limestone cliffs. These catwalks allow us to penetrate the canyon. Continuing on an upward path we finally arrive at the Ink Pots. Here there are many places to relax and enjoy the scenery. We descend the same way as the way in. It can get chilly in the canyon so pack a fleece today.
