Overview

By the 10th Century the Moors had established al-Andalus as the major silk-producing region in the western world. The warm south facing slopes of the sierras of the Axarquia perfectly suited the silk moth. Mulberry trees were cultivated in great numbers and villages sprang into life. The mulberry trees have gone but the pretty pueblos blancos still cling to the hillsides. Many of the ancient paths still exist and are the theme for our walking holiday.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive

Transfer from Malaga at pre – arranged time. Meet on the terrace later that evening at 6.30 where Brian will give a brief description of the week ahead.

Day 2: Pradillas and the Silk Route

Starting from the hotel, our walks takes us through the village and uphill for our first spectacular view of the Sierra Almijara sweeping down to the coast. We follow the ancient silk route used by muleteers to bring goods from the coast through the Alpujarras to Granada. This walk levels out and we pass three derelict Cortejo (farm house) used as rest points by the muleteers.  We picnic at one - the Venta Pradillas with great views to sea and, on a clear day, the African coast. We continue uphill on the path to the Puerto Blanquillo where we leave the Silk route and make our return down a valley joining a river to our pick up point at the Fabrica de la  Luz and our transfer back to the hotel.

Walking time: 6 hours

Day 3 Free day

Suggested options include a visit to Malaga for a city cycle tour or shopping, a visit to Nerja at the coast, hourse riding in the Mountains or a compete rest day in the Hotel relaxing by the pool.

Day 4 Carril de San Anton to Canillas

This walk commences from our hotel where we pick up a track that takes us to the village of Canillas de Albaida. The village is surrounded by high mountains of which the Atalaya and Verde mountains (1256 metres and 1325 metres) dominate a landscape of pine and oak trees; the habitat of eagles, mountain goats and wild boars. In the river valleys grapes, olives, avocados and tropical fruits are grown.

We start the walk in Carril de San Anton winding our way  towards the old Roman Bridge before reaching the river.

The walk itself initially takes in the Rio Cajula where we cross the river many times by means of stepping stones. We follow the river up the valley before emerging on to a forest track. We follow the forest track for an hour before entering a wood. Lunch now beckons and we rest for a while. Continuing on, we now follow the valley downhill back to Canillas. A short break here for a coffee or a beer before walking back to our Hotel in Competa.

Walking time: 4 - 5 hours

Day 5:  El Lucero

Today we employ the services of a 4 wheel drive to get us to the start. From the forest track we start to ascend to the summit of Lucero. The scenery is amazing and gets better as the walk unfolds We descend by the same route for pick up back to the hotel.

Walking time: 6 hours. Ascent 750m.

Day 6 Free Day

Day trip to Malaga. We could get a private bus if enough are interested.

Day 7 El Acebuchal

This walk takes us through the village and along a section of road before we ascend a mule track that in turn levels out along a valley. After lunch we continue to Quattro Caminos where we will transport by bus to a nearby beach. After a refreshing swim we will be bussed back to Competa for our final dinner together..

Walking time: 3.5 hours.

Day 8

We say adios to everybody in Competa. Bus departs for Malaga Airport at 8:45am.
