Self Guided Walking Tour on the Western Way Connemara & Mayo


Follow in the footsteps of Ireland’s patron saint by walking from Mayo to Connemara on the Western Way. Climb to the summit of the iconic Croagh Patrick where the saint fasted and cast out demons. Cycle the famous Greenway and  walk through Mám Éan (the pass of the birds ) and view the splendour of Connemara.

How to get here:

By Train: Direct to Westport Railway station. Free transfer to your B&B.

By Air: Fly to Ireland West Airport (Knock) which is served by numerous routes from the UK.
Take the bus from Knock to Westport. Check for bus departure times that coincides  with your flight’s arrival.


You will be met at the Mill Times Hotel, in Westport. It’s located two minutes walk from the bus stop and taken to your B&B located 5k from town. Your host is the tour organiser.



Day 1 arrive and check into your accommodation where you will be given your information pack.  The nearest pub  and restaurant is  15 minutes walk along the seafront. Your host will drop you to town but a taxi back ( approx €7 ) is at your own expense. Overnight Westport.


Day 2 You will be driven to Achill Island on the Wild Atlantic Way. From Achill you can bike the famous Greenway cycle route back to Westport. Overnight Westport.


Day 3: Ascent of Croagh Patrick Mountain. At 764m Irelands’s holy mountain dominates the landscape and given a clear day you will have unforgettable views. Overnight Westport.


Day 4: We will drive you to Drummin, a small village on your route South. A pleasant walk on back roads, wood land and on the banks of the Erriff river. Finish in Rock Bar where you will be driven to your B&B,  The Convent Guesthouse.

Overnight Leenane Village + Dinner Included.


Day 5: Free day to take things easy. A hot sea water bath in freshly harvested seaweed in the local hotel or a 90 minute cruise on Ireland’s only fjord aboard the Connemara Lady are options. If you wish you could also hire a taxi and visit nearby Kylemore Abbey.

Lough Inagh Lodge hotel –  your accommodation in Connemara.Day 6: Beginning from your accommodation and following a 15 minute road walk, you will pick up the Western Way and follow the trail all the way through the mountains to the Lough Inagh Lodge hotel, nesting snugly  in the Inagh Valley. Overnight Inagh Lodge.


Day 7: You will be driven to the start of today’s walk. Leafy country lanes followed by a green road that rises gently to the pass of the birds. Here is a holy well, stations of the cross, and a mass rock. Descending on a stony track and from the car park pick up the back road to your accommodation. Overnight Inagh Lodge.


Day 8: You will be driven to the bus stop on the main Galway – Clifden road where you can catch the bus to Galway.
